C&C Milano: a Milanese History

Grand architects and fine weavers flow through the bloodlines of C&C Milano founders Piero and Emanuele Castellini. Piero Castellini Baldissera, architect and interior designer, is the grandson of Piero Portaluppi, renown Milanese architect whose impressive architectural legacy was built during the 1930’s.

Castellini Baldissera continues today to enjoy a rich and varied career. His many prestigious projects offer a fascinating insight into the ways in which modern interiors have evolved. He is well known for his singular talent in redefining interior spaces sited within historic dwellings. His refined sense of colour, choice of materials and bespoke furniture designs define his signature architectural style.

Emanuele Castellini was born into a family of textile manufacturers. In 1850, his great grandfather Clateo established the family’s first mill in Milan. Specialising in the use of jute, hemp and linen fibres, they made textiles for functional use such as cheesecloth and tarpaulins. Their textiles carried the nation’s correspondence in sturdy sacks made for the Italian Post. They went on to specialise in fine bed linens and produced striped canvases for the deckchairs adorning Italy’s coastlines. Their well-known stripes were to be found at all the most exclusive bathing establishments from Versilia on the west coast to the Adriatic Riviera and the Venice Lido. In the 1980’s the Castellini mill merged with the Braghenti mill of Varese. Braghenti manufactured textiles for clothing and under Emanuele Castellini’s stewardship increased the production of natural fibre textiles. In the 1990’s both the family mills were acquired by Ratti of Como with Emanuele remaining on board until 1997 when he co-founded C&C Milano.

C&C Milano textiles are woven in Mediterranean colours and atmospheres which beautifully express the refined taste and quality Italy is known for. Precious natural fibres are the basis for a wealth of patterns in warm and vibrant colours. The effortless way the entire range works together to offer myriad, unique combinations is one of C&C Milano’s defining characteristics. Cashmere, linen, silk and velvet are the fibres of choice for elegant bed linens, quilts, duvets, bedcovers, pajamas, dressing gowns, blankets, throws, cushions, curtains, tablecloths and napkins.
